The Makola Market
That evening (after visiting the Accra Rehabilitation Center) Lea and I decided to go on an adventure. We had wanted to go to the fabric market to get more fabric to bring back to family and friends. Not everyone was interested in going to the busy market so we decided to go on our own. It was definately an adventure. I’m glad we went. To start with, the taxi took back roads, twisting and turning, I think to avoid traffic but we were a little concerned we were being kidnapped. He left us off right in the middle of everything. We found our way past the food stands to where the fabric shops were. We got very lost in the middle of the market and saw so many fabric designs that our heads began to spin. We heard “obruni” a lot. At one point we were walking down the street and a couple teenage boys were walking behind us, we were trying our hardest to ignore them because they were asking our names and giving us marriage proposals. This older man walked by and in my ear said “don’t pay them any attention”, he smiled and continued on his way. It was this type of nice, friendly, welcoming feeling that we got everywhere we went. The ladies at the fabric shops were all very nice. We found that when we got away from the main street the people in the shops were less pushy, very interested in chatting and left us alone when we were thinking. I’m glad we went but when we were done… we were finished!
